Hyderabad, October 6, 2025, The National Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Management (NITHM), Hyderabad, has launched a one-week “Orientation and Sensitization Programme for Tourist Police” in collaboration with the Department of Tourism, Government of Telangana.
The initiative aims to train Tourist Police personnel for deployment at major tourist destinations across the state.
The programme was inaugurated at the NITHM campus by Sri Mahesh M. Bhagwat, IPS, Additional Director General of Police (Law & Order), Telangana, in the presence of Prof. V. Venkata Ramana, Director, NITHM, Sri M. Ramana Kumar, AIG, Government of Telangana, Dr. M.K. Ganesh, Principal, NITHM, Mr. Prakash Ammanaolu, Chairman, FTCCI Tourism Committee, and Mr. Ramachandran, Co-Chairman, FTCCI Tourism Committee. Dr. M. K. Ganesh, Princiapal.
Ms. Michelle J. Frances, Placement and Training Officer, welcomed the dignitaries, while Dr. Niraj Gohil, Dean (Tourism), provided an overview of the programme. In his address, Prof. V. Venkata Ramana highlighted NITHM’s commitment to capacity building and professional development for the tourism sector, aligning with the vision of the Hon’ble Chief Minister to enhance tourist safety and satisfaction in Telangana.
As part of this initiative, 80 police personnel from nine Commissionerates have been assigned to key tourist locations, including Somasila (Nagarkurnool), Ananthagiri (Vikarabad), Ramappa (Mulugu), Yadagirigutta and Pochampally (Rachakonda–Yadadri Bhuvanagiri), Buddhavanam (Nalgonda), Bhadrachalam (Bhadradri Kothagudem), and Hyderabad.
Speaking at the inauguration, Sri Mahesh M. Bhagwat, IPS, lauded the initiative as a major step in improving tourist facilitation and safety across Telangana. He stressed the need for tourist-friendly policing, emphasizing soft skills, communication, and empathy to enhance visitors’ experiences.
Mr. D. Ramachandram, one of the programme’s resource persons, noted:
“Telangana now has one of the biggest Tourism Police forces in India with 80 personnel. It joins 14 other states that already have Tourism Police in place. Kerala was the first to launch the initiative in 2010. Across India, there are over 600 Tourist Police, while globally, around 60 countries have 20,000-plus Tourist Police. Telangana now joins this elite group.”
Telangana thus becomes the latest state to establish a dedicated Tourism Police Force, enhancing its tourism infrastructure and aligning with global standards of visitor safety and service.
The training covers soft skills, tourist facilitation, crowd and festival management, emergency preparedness, ethics, cyber awareness, and communication, conducted by NITHM faculty and invited experts from media, medical, sports, yoga, and tourism sectors.The session concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Dr. N.
